When you suck at Elf on the Shelf…

elf-on-the-shelf

I feel like I’m doing this whole Elf thing wrong.

I bought my Elf on the Shelf a few years ago, before the time when it actually meant anything to my kids (if it even means anything now).

I think my oldest was maybe two years old. I read about this cool new tradition and decided we should try it. I put the Elf out where she could see it and she stared at it (and me) with a blank expression.

“He’s here to watch you and report back to Santa!” I told her. More blank stares. Read More »

These cookies are the perfect wintertime treat! The combination of mint and chocolate in a warm cookie is delicious and refreshing.

The Very Best Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies

When I make regular chocolate chip cookies, I don’t mess with the best. I always use the original Nestle Toll House recipe.

In my opinion, nothing beats that recipe. I almost know it by heart at this point. (Although I usually halve the recipe to avoid eating the whole lot myself.)

But back to the mint chocolate chip cookie recipe.

Up until a few years ago, I had been living my life, minding my business, baking and eating plain old chocolate chip cookies. And then one day my sister-in-law made me some cookies. Read More »

Holiday Traditions with Hickory Farms

The holidays have a tendency to bring up all those warm and fuzzy feelings about families, traditions, and goodwill to men.

As a child, some of my favorite memories centered around the holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Eating Thanksgiving dinner at my aunt and uncle’s house. Picking the very best tree from my grandfather’s Christmas tree lot. Making butter cookies with my grandmother.

And of course, shopping for every single one of my presents at the mall every Christmas Eve. (I guess you could say I was a bit of a procrastinator back then.)

I still remember how crowded the mall was but hey, I wasn’t driving yet, so I didn’t have to worry about parking! Read More »
