If you’re still dragging your feet, here are six easy ways to get your household into the Halloween spirit!

Halloween is a great holiday. There’s no big family dinner, the decorations are fun, kids love it, and you end up with lots of “free” candy when it’s all said and done.

With that being said, it may be tempting to put off even thinking about Halloween because it means the official start to the Halloween/Thanksgiving/Hannukah & Christmas rush.

The good thing is, it’s not hard to quickly get into the Halloween spirit. Here’s how… Read More »

Donate Your Old Halloween Costumes

Help those less fortunate than you by donating your old Halloween costumes!

happy-halloween

For many of us, our biggest concern about Halloween is keeping our kids from eating too much candy.

For other parents, however, there are different anxieties. Like worrying about where they are going to come up with the extra cash for their child’s Halloween costume this year.

Halloween is truly one of the most fun holidays for a child. You get to dress up, run around the neighborhood with your friends, and collect CANDY at each house.

So imagine the sadness when a little six-year-old is told that his mom doesn’t have a costume for him this year.

But there’s an easy way to fix this problem– donate your old Halloween costumes to a local charity!

If you’re like me, you have all of your kids’ costumes from previous years just sitting around collecting dust. Sure, my kids play dress-up with them sometimes, but at least half of them no longer fit.

Instead of keeping them for no reason, I can donate them to children in need of Halloween costumes. It’s a no-brainer!

In my neck of the woods, there is a costume drive being hosted by Steph Snaps Photos, Hilton McLean Tysons Corner, and Harth.

The collected costumes and funds will benefit the children of the The Shelter HouseThe Alternative House and Jill’s House.  The Alternative House has a vision of a community in which all young people are safe, live in a nurturing environment and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Jill’s House provides respite for children with intellectual disabilities and their families; and The Shelter House is a community based non-profit organization serving homeless families and domestic violence victims in Fairfax, Virginia.  We are grateful to have the opportunity to outfit over 300 children this Halloween.

New or gently used costumes of any size can be dropped off at Hilton McLean Tysons Corner any day.  The hotel will offer its on-site laundry services to prepare all costumes for delivery to Alternative House the week of October 19, prior to its scheduled Halloween programming. To learn more or to donate to the cause visit http://www.gofundme.com/costumedrive2016.

Want to find a Halloween costume drive near you?

Just google “where to donate Halloween costumes in (your county).” At least one or two options should pop up.

If you are having trouble finding a drop-off location, you could always donate the costumes to a Goodwill or Salvation Army, OR leave a comment with your county and state and I can try to help you find a costume drive near you.

Do you dress your pets up for Halloween? I will admit that the thought had never even crossed my mind.

My dog HATES Halloween– all the doorbells and children walking up to the house makes him anxious and bark a lot. He usually spends Halloween locked in his crate.

Still, my kids and I were playing around with him the other day and we dressed him up in a few different outfits. I think he looked the cutest as a sheriff!

If you’re a dog-lover, here are some fun facts about dogs and Halloween that you might enjoy! Read More »

I love to celebrate the spirit of holidays through books. For each holiday that I have a box of decorations (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.), I also have our holiday books in the box.

We unpacked our Halloween box yesterday and the kids loved reading all the “new” books…which were really just our books from the past few years. And each year we add one or two to the collection.

Early favorites judging by bedtime story requests last night and tonight are The Itsy Bitsy Pumpkin and Sofia the First: The Halloween Ball.

Here are twenty Halloween books for $5 or less that you can add to your collection. All are $5 (and change) or less and all are available on Amazon prime so they will get to you in just a few days!

I can’t even believe it but we never did carve our pumpkins. My daughter painted one and I’m about to throw some toilet paper on the other two to make them into mummies.

I’ll spare you the picture of my trash can littered with candy wrappers…

I’m sure you know what that looks like!

Oh and in case you didn’t know…

I Should Probably Carve My Pumpkins Soon

Wow. How did it get to be October 27? I should probably carve my pumpkins soon, huh?

I really need to make that Task #1 for Monday: carve/decorate/paint/do something to the pumpkins to make them look more festive than they do now.

I’m writing this post on Monday morning and I am exhausted. (Even though it’s 7:30 and my kids are both still asleep, meaning I actually got to sleep “late” today.) Read More »

This is my second year making Halloween window silhouettes. They are such a fun, cheap, easy way to get your house festive for Halloween!

Last year I made googly-eyed monsters and aliens but when selecting this year’s images, my three-year-old begged and begged for me not to do anything scary.

I tried to sketch out a friendly witch, but couldn’t get the head to look right. So I opted for some animals. Read More »

Kitchen Renovation Update

kitchen renovation update

Good morning, Monday! I hope you were not rudely awakened by a one-year-old screaming “Apple! Apple! Apple!” at 6 A.M. like I was. (That’s what he says for “food.”)

I thought I’d give a little kitchen renovation update, in order to explain why my life feels slightly in shambles and out of control as of late.

I think I’ve been without a stove, sink, and dishwasher for a little over a week now, but it’s hard to keep track.

And yes I know I’m lucky to be able to redo my kitchen, but it’s been slightly inconvenient.  Read More »

It’s the first day of October and I’ve got Halloween on the brain! Possibly because I’ve been eating mini Kit-Kats like it’s my job.

Although I am pregnant and a stay-at-home mom. So maybe it is my job??

But anyways, my husband has told me the last two times I went apple picking that it’s too early to bring home a pumpkin.

Well guess what? Now it’s October and this lady is bringing home the pumpkin. (And more apples.) Or I will be bringing one home when I go pumpkin picking this Saturday.

What I WON’T be doing? Carving a pumpkin. It’s for suckers.
