 How to Soothe a Toddler

My 16-month-old has recently begun waking in the middle of the night.

We’re not really sure what he wants– do his teeth hurt? Is he hungry? Does he want to watch the infomercials that are on at 2:00 A.M.?

WE DON’T KNOW.

In any event, the most important concern for me (as the parent who gets up with him 90% of the time) is How do I soothe my toddler?

The first step when my son wakes up is to give him a pacifier to see if that will solve the problem. (It usually does.)

We use Tommee Tippee pacifiers. I like them because of the cute design, orthodontic shape, and the fact that they are BPA free.

My son just likes them because, as the website says, they are “baby-approved.”

And trust me, there have been brands of pacifiers that he refuses to suck on. I don’t know what it is about Tommee Tippee binkies, but he just seems to love them.

If after he has the pacifier he is still upset, I will rock him for a few minutes in the glider. I make sure he has his handmade blankie from his Mi-Mom to hold and I sing one of my lullabies.

If that isn’t enough to soothe him back to sleep, my last resort is to give him a cup of milk (we took his bottles away last month).

The only time he has milk in his cup is right before a nap or bedtime, so this inevitably reminds him that hey it’s time for sleeping!

Once he finishes the milk, I lay him down in his crib, making sure he has his blankie and two spare pacifiers next to him…for any further middle-of-the-night pacifier emergencies.

Soothe Toddler

I return to my bed, praying that both he and I will both fall back asleep quickly.

If that doesn’t work, well then, it’s Daddy’s turn to try!

So those are my tips for soothing a baby who wakes up in the middle of the night…what are yours?

I’ve found white noise helps soothe. I also have one lullaby that we sing for bed and nap time (twinkle twinkle). I might have to sing it over and over again but it’s consistent with sleep. Oh, and definitely still a pacifier 🙂

Yes we use white noise for naps and nighttime. I used to like white noise for myself for sleeping, but not in awhile. Now I like to hear what’s going on.
