Disclosure: This post may make you insanely jealous of me because I got to meet Andy Cohen. My apologies in advance. Also, this post contains affiliate links.
Well, everyone, last night I went to my Graceland…the Bravo Clubhouse for a taping of Watch What Happens Live.
Never in a million years did I think I’d actually get to go to WWHL in my life. Tickets are SO hard to come by.
Until suddenly my friend Megan (who works for NBC) announced that she got tickets! And I was invited! AHHHHHH! I totally freaked out.
As the show’s date got closer, everything seemed to fall into place.
First, we found out that the guests were going to be Melissa and Joe Gorga.
I have a a tiny connection with Melissa Gorga, because last October I blogged about my Melissa Gorga Experiment, in which I followed the rules of her book for a month to see how it affected my marriage. While I was doing the experiment, Melissa followed along and occasionally retweeted the link to my blog posts to her 800,000 Twitter followers.
So I thought that maybe there was a chance that Melissa would remember me at the taping and say hello. I tweeted her and she answered back!
We arrived at the Clubhouse at 8:15 for the 9:00 show taping (it was a special early show). The Clubhouse was in an ordinary building whose appearance didn’t give away the five years of amazingness it has seen inside its walls, with the likes of guests from Lady Gaga to Martha Stewart (and every Bravolebrity in between) visiting Andy on WWHL.
Ushered upstairs, we hung out in the front room with the other audience members (less than 20 in total). Two young fun bartenders cranked up the music (kicking it off with my fave song “Bang Bang”) and started serving drinks. On the menu:
Somewhere during this pre-party I recognized Melissa Gorga’s sisters walk by. (Quick sidenote: Melissa’s sister Kim Pirrella films a funny NickMom show called “Three Moms” with my friend Joey Fortman, so I also kind of have a tiny connection to Kim, too. She was another fan of the Melissa Gorga Experiment and used to retweet my blog posts.)
Just before 9:00, the Bravo people led us all to our seats. When I say that the WWHL studio is tiny, I mean tiny. You know the part you see on camera, but ten feet from that is the audience section which is just three rows of seating on benches behind the camera guys. And yes, I was sitting directly behind Camera 1. Or possibly Camera 2.
Melissa’s sisters, mom, and stepfather sat in the row directly behind us. Kim actually did remember me and gave me a very warm hello, as did her other sister Lysa. They are dolls!
Melissa, Joe, and Andy walked in right before the show went live. We were encouraged to cheer really loudly at every introduction and return from commercial break.
The guest bartender was Lee Schrager, author of Fried & True: More than 50 Recipes for America’s Best Fried Chicken and Sides. There were plates filled with fried chicken on the bar, but I never saw anyone touch them, which begs the question WHO GOT TO EAT THE CHICKEN???
Melissa and Joe were very natural and funny on-camera, as was Andy. The best part of the show was when Joe’s cell phone rang during the show.
They taped the WWHL after-show (which airs on BravoTV.com) immediately following the TV show, but that only takes about ten minutes. Then it was all over. We were instructed to stay in our seats until the guests left.
Melissa’s family went up on set to take pictures with her and Kim nudged Melissa to let tell her that I was in the audience. That’s when Melissa walked over to me, gave me a hug, and said, “Thank you so much for writing about my book last year! That was so nice of you. Really, thank you SO much!”
I told her that I had fun doing it and that my husband loved being the recipient of the Melissa Gorga treatment…all true!
The Gorgas left. The rest of the audience left. BUT WE STAYED, because Megan is apparently a V.I.P.
The Bravo bartender/audience wrangler/special V.I.P. assistant told us to go on the set and take pictures and that Andy would be back in a few minutes, so have one of our phones ready to take a quick pic with him.
I, of course, chose Andy’s chair to sit in and I grabbed his Sharpie for the picture, because he touched it and I wanted to touch his greatness.
He walked back in right then and I said “Oh sorry!” because I was in his chair. He said, “No, it’s fine. Here, I’ll go behind you guys.”
We took a quick picture, Andy asked us if we had fun, and then he disappeared into the night like a magical Bravo unicorn.
I was too stunned by his presence to give him my elevator pitch for the three ideas I have for him:
- Bravo’s website needs recaps of the Housewives shows so fans can go there and interact. Right now they are going to other sites to chat about the show. Let’s bring it back to Bravo’s site. I WILL WRITE THE RECAPS FOR YOU, ANDY.
- Real Housewives of South Jersey a.k.a. RHOSJ
- A reality show about bloggers and the drama that comes along with them
That is all. Andy– I can be reached at Lindsay@TheNaughtyMommy.com.
And then we left the building and the fairy tale ended. I drove home to South Jersey to find that my TiVo (or more likely my husband) had messed up the recording and only taped half of RHONJ. Thanks.
If I had to pick one word to describe the night, I would say MAGICAL. Thank you so much to Megan and everyone at Bravo for being so much fun! Best. Night. EVER!
