Never Judge A Book By Its Cover

Snap judgments might cause you to miss out on a great book or a new friend!

Never Judge a Book By Its Cover

Never judge a book by its cover.

That’s always been a hard one for me, because I like pretty books.

I recently sent a book (The Post-Birthday World by Lionel Shriver) to a friend for her birthday. When she thanked me and asked why I had sent her that particular book, I told her it was one of my favorite novels. (But also, it’s a really pretty book!)

Even if I didn’t love The Post-Birthday World, I’d probably keep this one for display on a bookshelf. But it’s a great book, I swear! Read More »

The Golden Rule

“Yes, but would you let the Syrian refugees into our country? Yes or no?” I pressed my husband.

“Why are we talking about this again? This is two nights in a row now,” my husband replied.

I wanted to scream. WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THIS AGAIN?!

This is what’s going on in the world right now. In our country.

It is important, and so we will talk about it.

My Squad

My Squad

Ever since Taylor Swift got herself a “squad,” that’s all I’ve been hearing about. Taylor’s got a squad. Kim Kardashian has a squad. Beyonce has a squad.

Well guess what, Taylor? Non-celebrities can have squads, too. I mean, I’m a mom of three trying to manage a household, run a blog, and still have a social life. A girl like me needs a squad.

Or a pretend one anyway.

So after countless interviews, research, and and debate, here are the founding members of The Naughty Mommy Squad…made up entirely of Bravolebrities! Read More »

#TwinHillsSanta Spreads Holiday Cheer to Alaska

twin-hills-santa

We are right in the thick of the holiday season and I see the goodwill all around me.

Companies are hosting toy drives, neighbors drop off Christmas cookies, and even strangers at the busy stores seem to be in a cheerful mood. Well, most of them, anyway.

It’s the holiday spirit!

And even bloggers are getting into the act to create a wonderful holiday for a group of unsuspecting kids in a remote Alaskan village.

Listen to this heartwarming story… Read More »

Is It Harder to Make Friends As You Get Older?

A page I follow on Facebook (Momma Lew’s Blog) recently posed the question, “Do you find it has been hard for you to make friends as you grow older?”

This was my answer: “I think it’s hard because you may have specific requirements for friendship as an adult…maybe you want someone with same-aged kids or the same beliefs as you. As a kid, it’s just, ‘Oh hey, you live on my street? Great, let’s be friends!’ Also, I think the fear of rejection is greater as an adult.”

The rest of the women who responded all said YES it’s harder to make friends as you grow older, for various reasons. Read More »

One Face of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Katie and mom

I struggled with whether or not to even write this post. Once I decided, it became how do I want to express my thoughts…because I have a few about this topic!

My first thought– Facebook videos or posts that go viral or become trendy annoy me. I usually steer clear.

Later thoughts were– Oh my God another ice bucket video?! (until you just accepted the fact that you’d see at least 25 pop up in your newsfeed per day).  Read More »

My Wishlist

My Wishlist

I was tentatively going to call this “Things I Want For Mother’s Day And/Or My Birthday,” but I thought that was too obvious. (My birthday is on May 26th.)

I settled on “My Wishlist,” because maybe people would think it was a wishlist about world peace or an end to suffering, and not just a list of presents that I want my family and friends to see.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d definitely like world peace, but I’m not sure anyone can buy me that for my birthday. If you can, by all means- go for it. If not, here is a list of things I want.  Read More »

Hallmark Get Carded Challenge {GIVEAWAY}

In today’s digital age, there’s really no need for traditional paper cards anymore. Almost everyone has email or text capabilities.

That’s what makes receiving a card in the mail all the more special. It’s such an out-of-the-blue occasion and it will always bring a smile to the face of the recipient.

I personally have almost as much happiness just sending the card, as I imagine my friend or family member opening up their mailbox to see a surprise letter- not a thank you note, not a birthday card, not a holiday card. Just a random card that says, “Hey, how are you doing? I’m thinking of you.” Those cards are the BEST.

As part of Hallmark’s Get Carded Challenge, I received a gift pack of ten Hallmark cards in the mail and pledged to send seven cards in seven days.  Read More »

Friendships Revisited

For the month of July, I focused on Friendship for My Happiness Project. I wanted to make friendship a priority in my life, something that has been difficult since the birth of my children.

I set out to complete my tasks of: remember birthdays, hang out with friends once a week, call friends more, and get rid of toxic friendships.

I must say, I did pretty well for this month. I set up an online birthday reminder system. I got together with a friend each week. I attempted to talk on the phone with a few people (hey, it’s not my fault if they don’t answer!). And I stopped pursuing relationships with those who I felt were toxic.

These Are A Few Of My Favorite Things…{BLOGS}

Since Twitter has #FF (Follow Friday), where you give a shout-out to Twitter profiles that you want your followers to check out, I’d thought I’d do something similar today.

I would like to share a few of my favorite blogs with you. Some of them I go to for a recipe or a craft idea, some just make me laugh.

On Friendship: My Happiness Project, July

My focus this month for My Happiness Project will be on Friendship. This is a topic that is so very important to me. I grew up with a wonderful group of girlfriends in middle school and high school. This group of nine has stayed close even now, fourteen years after graduating. While we may only get together as a group at weddings, showers, and the like, we still stay in frequent contact through group emails, mass texts, and phone calls. Read More »

Boozy Play Dates

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure policy here.

So Lilly and I had a play date this morning with my friend Katie and her son.

It was great- the kids played together, we got to chat, and everyone had a fun time.

Still, though, we had to facilitate the play and keep watch for sharing issues with the toys, because our kids are still little (1.5 and 2.5 years).

This brings me to my question…when do the boozy play dates start? Read More »
