Getting Kids Excited About Yoga

Want to know how to get your kids excited about doing yoga? Here’s how the yoga craze started in my house!

Getting Kids Excited About Yoga

“But it’s NOT FAIR!” my four-year-old whined as we climbed the stairs to her bedroom one evening.

“Well, you know, life isn’t fair,” I responded. “But tell me. What isn’t fair this time?”

She looked as despondent as if I had just informed her that I had accidentally deleted all her Sofia the First and The Winx Club episodes from the DVR. Read More »

Charity Miles

Charity Miles

Several weeks ago I wrote about Running Tips for Beginners and today I’m sharing a way to make your runs (or walks) even more worthwhile…through the Charity Miles app!

Charity Miles logs your mileage when you’re walking, running, or biking and then participating companies donate money (based on how far you go) to the charity of your choice. It’s so simple.

Walking/running earns up to 25 cents per mile, while biking earns up to 10 cents per mile. If you log a lot of miles each week, the donations add up…and it’s not coming from your pocket. This is a great way to give back when you just don’t have the extra cash in your budget to support charities as much as you’d like.

Here’s how you can use Charity Miles today to start earning your favorite charity money…

Step 1. Download the free Charity Miles app (available for Apple and android devices). Read More »

Princeton Half Marathon Wrap

Princeton HalfThis post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure policy here.
On Saturday night I was at my sister’s house in New Jersey. I had driven there that afternoon because I was set to run the Princeton Half Marathon bright and early Sunday morning.

Yippee! NOT.

I had a million reasons why I was going to bail on the race.

I got no sleep last night.

I haven’t run more than 2-3 miles in the past three weeks.Inline image 1 Read More »

Running Tips for Beginners

Running Tips for Beginners Post

A few Saturdays ago as I was finishing up a glorious hellish six mile run in the pouring rain, I thought to myself…Why? Why do I do this?

Then I reminded myself that running keeps me thin, healthy, and it lets me escape my children for however long my run is each day. Ah yes. That is why.

Since moving to Virginia a little over a week ago, I have been in a bit of a running slump. I don’t have my daily schedule down yet. There are still boxes to be unpacked. I don’t feel like running is a priority right now…which is horrible timing because I am supposed to run the Princeton Half Marathon on Sunday.

My running partner for the race, Marta, texted me today to make sure I was still doing it. And even though I have only run approximately five miles in the past ten days, I said, “You bet!” Read More »

Running Towards Sanity

Running Towards Sanity

Running…the sport for people who aren’t good at sports.

That’s how I fell into it, anyways.

My mom wanted me to have an activity that occupied my afternoons in high school. My friends were doing things like field hockey and soccer, but they weren’t for me. So I joined cross-country and track (winter and spring).

I was pretty good at it back then. Nothing spectacular, but I won some (smaller) races in my day.

I kept up with running in my twenties, mainly to counteract the lifestyle I had of eating too much pizza and drinking too much beer. (I was not yet into the wine.)

As I turned 30, becoming a mom of a little one made running a bit more challenging. No longer could I decide to go for a long run on a whim, grab my sneakers, and go. “Be back in an hour!” Read More »

30 Day Shred Wrap Up

It’s hard to believe that it’s May already. It’s even harder for me to believe that 30 days of doing The 30 Day Shred are over. (Thank God.)

I think this was truly the first time I ever completed it for 30 days in a row without skipping a day.

Towards the end, I had a few days where I really didn’t want to do it, but my Shred partner Kate gave me the encouragement I needed…It’s just twenty minutes! Twenty minutes out of your WHOLE day. Then you can have wine. And cookies. Read More »

Fed Up

Why I'm Fed Up

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure policy here.
Feeding our children a healthy diet should be easy. Right?

We live in the world’s richest nation. We like to think we are health-conscious. We have an endless supply of *seemingly* nutritious options at the grocery store– things that appear to be the correct choice when trying to be healthy. Things like reduced-fat salad dressing. Skim milk. Whole-grain waffles.

Yet these things seem to directly contradict the facts that: childhood obesity is increasing at a startling rate AND that this will be the first generation of children to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents’ generation.

Last week I watched a documentary called “Fed Up,” about the abundance of sugar in processed foods. Sure, maybe you would assume that. But I don’t think you know just how much and just how damaging it is to our country’s health. Read More »

Drinking a Gallon of Water a Day: Conclusions

drinking a gallon of water a day conclusions

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure policy here.
Yesterday marked my 30th day of drinking a gallon of water a day. Damn, that went by fast!

I’m planning to continue drinking a gallon each day, but I won’t make myself crazy over it…so if it’s 9:00 PM and I still have 24 oz. to go, I probably wouldn’t force it down. Because then I’d be up at 11:00 PM to pee.

But the plan is to keep doing this, because my doctor said pregnant women actually do need a gallon of water each day. And guess what? If you’re breastfeeding, you need even more! Read More »

10 Tips to Make Drinking a Gallon of Water a Day Easy

10 tips to make drinking a gallon of water a day easy

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure policy here.

A little over two weeks ago, I started an experiment to drink a gallon of water a day for 30 days.

Here are some tips I’ve found to make drinking a gallon of water a day easy for you…

1. Add some flavor. So far I have put either lemon juice or cucumbers in my water. If you haven’t tried cucumbers, do it. It’s so refreshing! Or if you want to get fancy, try this recipe for Strawberry Lime Cucumber Mint water. Read More »

Week 2 Update: Drinking a Gallon of Water a Day

drinking a gallon of water a day

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure policy here.

So now it has been TWO full weeks of drinking a gallon of water a day.

Constantly drinking water has become part of my natural routine now. I always have my 24 oz. Tervis Tumbler with me during the day. (Exception: I don’t take it out on errands, because I don’t want to have to pee in a public restroom if I don’t have to.)

Filling it up is the first thing I do in the morning (after peeing). I try to get the first 24 oz. down before I “allow” myself to have a coffee or tea. Read More »

Water Water Everywhere

photo (34)

It’s December 9th and I’m looking out the window at pouring rain. Can’t we get some snow? Pretty please?

Inside my house is also an exciting scene: half-decorated tree, pumpkins (don’t ask), and a three-year-old in a smock and my shoes.

Speaking of torrential amounts of liquid, yesterday I started a challenge to drink a gallon of water each day for 30 days (which I am referring to as “Operation Chug-A-Lug”).

Day 1 went swimmingly (hehe). Seriously, though, it was not hard at all.

Frequent trips to the bathroom? Of course. But that was really the only bad part.  Read More »

Summer + pregnancy DO NOT = an eagerness to go work out. (At least in my book.)

Lately, it’s been taking extra motivation for me to get out the door for a run or even a walk…sometimes I promise myself a special dessert or a bubble bath. But the BEST incentive for me to get my butt moving is a bangin’ playlist to listen to.

I finally took the time to download all of my current favorite songs, grabbed my new JBL Reflect Sport Headphones, and headed out. So what if I only ran 1.5 miles? I had a dog and a jogging stroller, so that’s gotta count for something extra. Right? Read More »

The Naughty Mommy’s Lazy Guide to Being Healthy

No excuses…here’s the lazy guide to being healthy!

lazy guide healthy
This winter has been brutal. I have tried to keep up with my exercising, but I’m failing miserably.

I had been taking my dog for a quick one or two mile run everyday, even in the snowy weather. About two weeks ago, it got way too icy for me.

I set out with Toby and found that there was no good place to step. The streets were icy. Sidewalks were icy. The easement strips were covered in snow that sank down with every step I took. Fun! Read More »

Boosting Your Energy with EBOOST: Review

EBOOST Product Review

I’m always tired. A cup of coffee does the trick in the morning, but that rush of caffeine only lasts so long. When afternoon comes, I find myself wanting an energy boost.

But anytime I decide to have that second cup of coffee, I regret it. I get all jittery and anxious.

So what’s a tired mom to do? (And don’t say, “Take a nap.” I HATE when people tell me that. There’s too much stuff to do to take a nap! Always!) Read More »
