Cool off with this healthy, refreshing treat your kids will love to make AND enjoy!

FB Frozen Yogurt-Dipped Berries

Confession: I really don’t like cooking with my kids. It pains me. I know, I know, I’m a terrible person.

But they are just so messy. Every time we bake together it ends up in a disaster zone in the kitchen and lots of tears. And the kids get a little upset, too.

That’s why I love this recipe. It’s easy and doesn’t cause a huge, disastrous mess. There will be no cracked eggs on your floor or flour flying through the air and coating your clean dishes on the drying mat. I promise. Read More »

How Much Sugar My Kids Eat in a Day

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure policy here.

I had no idea how much sugar my kids were ingesting on a daily basis. You will be shocked!

Sugar in One Day

Candy, candy, candy. Snacks, snacks, snacks.

That is all my kids want to talk about.

Thank God the last of the sugar-themed holidays (Easter) is quickly approaching. Then it’s smooth sailing until Halloween. I hope.

Because the sugar intake for my kids has gotten out of control. Holiday candy…potty-training M&Ms…visits from grandparents bearing sweets…it goes on and on. Read More »

That Sugar Film

After watching Fed Up and seeing just how much added sugar is in everyday foods like waffles, bread, and even spaghetti sauce, it’s hard to look away.

Even though I haven’t always stuck to my pledge to eliminate sugary foods from my family’s diet, I am still making a conscious effort to read the labels and avoid added sugars wherever I can.

The most troubling part of the sugar problem today is that it’s such a sneaky predator. You can believe you are making “healthy” purchases of things like Nutri-Grain waffles and yogurt, when in reality, they have as much added sugar as junk food.

That is what That Sugar Film is all about.

That Sugar Film, opening in select theaters and available On Demand today, tells the story of Damon Gameau’s quest to eat only foods perceived as “healthy” and document what happens to his body as a result. Read More »

How to Cook Bacon THE EASY WAY

How to Cook Bacon The Easy Way

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure policy here.
Everyone loves bacon. Even babies, apparently, because there are now bacon-shaped teething toys.

I bet you think you know how to cook bacon. I mean, I thought I knew how to cook bacon easily– put it in a frying pan. Right?

WRONG!

When you know how to cook bacon the easy way, you’ll never go back to the frying pan method again.

After all, who wants to stand over a sizzling pan while you and your stove get splashed with bacon grease? Not me!

I HATE cleaning my stove, which makes this new easy way to cook bacon simply THE BEST method out there! Read More »

Day 1: Fed Up Challenge

10 Day No Sugar Diet Day 1

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure policy here.
I survived Day 1 of the Fed Up (No Added Sugars for 10 Days) Challenge, mainly due to a loophole I discovered yesterday afternoon.

WINE IS ALLOWED! I repeat, you are allowed to drink wine on this challenge!

You are only prohibited from having foods with added sugars, therefore, wine is perfectly acceptable. Hooray! Thank you to my friend Marla for pointing this out to me.  Read More »

Sugar Free Meal Plan

Okay so this is not exactly a sugar free “meal plan,” but rather a list of sugar free breakfast, lunch, and dinner options that you can then customize into your own sugar free meal plan if you’d like.

I tried to keep the list as close as possible to the kinds of meals that I actually eat now.

Here are the breakfast, lunch, and dinner options for when you are experimenting with creating a sugar free meal plan for you or your family.

Note: We are going by the “rules” of the Fed Up Challenge-– no ADDED sugar foods for 10 days. Naturally-occurring sugar in fruits and vegetables is acceptable. Read More »

The 10-Day No Sugar Diet

The 10-Day No Sugar Diet

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure policy here.I am not a medical professional. Check with your doctor before starting any new diet or exercise regimen.

In case you haven’t heard, I’m kind of obsessed with the documentary “Fed Up.”

After watching it last week, I became inspired to do something. Actually, lots of things.

On a larger scale, I’d like to advocate for healthier foods served in our schools and food labels that clearly depict how much sugar is inside.

But I’m going to start small– with my own family. We are going to do a no added sugar diet for 10 days, as per the Fed Up Challenge. Read More »

Fed Up

Why I'm Fed Up

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure policy here.
Feeding our children a healthy diet should be easy. Right?

We live in the world’s richest nation. We like to think we are health-conscious. We have an endless supply of *seemingly* nutritious options at the grocery store– things that appear to be the correct choice when trying to be healthy. Things like reduced-fat salad dressing. Skim milk. Whole-grain waffles.

Yet these things seem to directly contradict the facts that: childhood obesity is increasing at a startling rate AND that this will be the first generation of children to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents’ generation.

Last week I watched a documentary called “Fed Up,” about the abundance of sugar in processed foods. Sure, maybe you would assume that. But I don’t think you know just how much and just how damaging it is to our country’s health. Read More »

Drinking a Gallon of Water a Day: Conclusions

drinking a gallon of water a day conclusions

This post may contain affiliate links. Read full disclosure policy here.
Yesterday marked my 30th day of drinking a gallon of water a day. Damn, that went by fast!

I’m planning to continue drinking a gallon each day, but I won’t make myself crazy over it…so if it’s 9:00 PM and I still have 24 oz. to go, I probably wouldn’t force it down. Because then I’d be up at 11:00 PM to pee.

But the plan is to keep doing this, because my doctor said pregnant women actually do need a gallon of water each day. And guess what? If you’re breastfeeding, you need even more! Read More »

A little over two weeks ago, I started an experiment to drink a gallon of water a day for 30 days.

Here are some tips I’ve found to make drinking a gallon of water a day easy for you…

1. Add some flavor. So far I have put either lemon juice or cucumbers in my water. If you haven’t tried cucumbers, do it. It’s so refreshing! Or if you want to get fancy, try this recipe for Strawberry Lime Cucumber Mint water. Read More »

Grandparents Day Brunch Menu

Grandparents Day Brunch Menu

On Friday I read somewhere that it was Grandparents Day on September 7th. Two days away. Oops.

Is this a real holiday or did Hallmark make it up? Not like it matters, even if the only place I saw it celebrated was on Sprout, I knew my mom would be expecting a card. (She’s like, really into cards.)

Since I knew it was too late to get cards out in time, I decided to throw an impromptu Grandparents Day Brunch. I invited all the grandparents and they all said yes.

Pinterest helped me come up with a fabulous brunch menu and everything turned out delicious! Read More »

Help! Three-Year-Old Picky Eating

pickyeating

So, I need your help with the dominant problem in my house right now: three-year-old picky eating.

My three-year-old daughter refuses to eat most fruits and vegetables. (I feel like I wrote a very similar post about a year ago. Clearly, not much has changed!)

She also fights me about what is on her dinner/lunch plate. Breakfast is usually not a problem– she will eat cereal, waffles, eggs, etc. Read More »
